The Story of TruLuvGifts

As a kid in elementary school, our family made yearly excursions with my Dad on sales calls to his accounts in Minneapolis. Since he worked as a salesperson for the label division of a large national corporation, perhaps it was natural that I would have an early awareness of consumer marketplaces. And it was during these trips that I was first inspired to cultivate a unique shopping experience for others.

My two favorite destinations on these annual trips were a big box store and a specialty supermarket. Now, for a kid in the early '80s it might seem strange to be so impressed with retail outlets, but both places left a mark on me because they seemed both different and somehow "cool." We had big box stores at home. And while this one – which was regional at the time – sold the same type of products at low prices, it brought retail to the next level by being cleaner and more organized with fresh-looking displays and a strong brand identity. Well-designed packaging and presentations made familiar products seem new and interesting.

The speciality supermarket, on the other hand, was more like the luxurious hotel or restaurant of supermarkets – a large selection of fresh gourmet foods, high class décor and elegant displays (I swear it seemed the meat chops were laid out on diamonds) – but also with a strong sense of identity throughout the store. Both impressed me in profound ways. Visiting these establishments was an excursion rather than an errand.

Decades later, much has changed across the retail landscape, especially with Internet and the advent of online shopping. But what remains true is that people are drawn to unique, positive experiences, even when they shop. Customers want to discover something different and they want the process to be enjoyable.
